Professor Khaled Al-Ardawi, a faculty member at the College of Law at the University of Karbala, participated in the first international scientific conference on peacebuilding, held at the College of Political Science at the University of Sulaymaniyah.

Dr. Al-Ardawi’s participation came with a research paper titled “The Absence of an Effective Role for the Political Opposition and Its Impact on the Democratic Transition in Iraq.” The paper examined the evolution of the political opposition in Iraq from the beginning of the formation of the Iraqi state in the early twentieth century to the present.

The research indicated that the Iraqi political opposition has adopted two distinct models: the first, a dual government and opposition model before 2003, and the second, a model of merging government and opposition after 2003. Both models are unsuitable for strengthening democracy and consolidating its institutions and value system in Iraqi political life.
